AARON KWOK AND THE HKJC WANT HONG KONG TO GO TO THE… DARK SIDE?

Of course, the Prog-Rock music of artists like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer was pretty experimentally dark and mind altering. But those were the Sixties when some were trying to be like Syd Barrett and “Shine On, You Crazy Diamond”.
Here, we are, however in 2026 and Aaron Kwok, the one-time HKTVB dancer, who became one of Hong Kong’s four clean cut Canto Pop “Heavenly Kings” in the Eighties, has released “Chong Chong Chong”, his much anticipated theme song for the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Year of the Horse…and it’s, well, different.
Looking at the credits, a cast of thousands, especially from Team Aaron were involved in this project, and with everything coming together in an accompanying music video that could be a subliminal message that we’re all going to hell and becoming toast, or that the usually conservative HKJC is breaking with tradition and going where no racing club has gone before.
Filmed in the dark of night, it’s all spookily reminiscent of that other Gangham Style oddity called “Giddy Up” written and choreographed last year by the HKJC for pop group Now United.
As for this new video, it’s a cleverly designed surreal electro pastiche where the ever popular and forever young Aaron Kwok is filmed looking moody, there’s Aaron changing wardrobe, Aaron rapping in English and Aaron gyrating with his backup dancers to a piece of fragmented music that is Sixties psychedelia, yet adventurous, and, like the recent effort “Racing With Football”, hurls the Club into the future shock of the great unknown.
Maybe Aaron and the Hong Kong Jockey Club are telling us where we’re all Jean Claude Van Dammed and headed to somewhere that just might be Armageddon…or the much discussed opening in October of the Conghua Equine Centre or whatever it’s called today?
Who knows?
Right now, it looks like a mysterious and uber expensive and high stylish film noir project from a “heavenly king” playing the role of someone who has seemingly gone over to the dark side and wants everyone in Hong Kong to join him along with a racing club going Chong Chong Chong.
