SHUCKS, NO OYSTERS AND WINFRIED FREAKS OUT!

After months away from the venue mainly because of not being in Hong Kong, I met up with a group of friends to discuss an idea I have to re-energise the city and create something holistically creative and interactive instead of another round of irrelevant bibs and bobs seemingly produced by some local kindergarten.

This upmarket venue was once the most popular six star restaurant in a five star hotel- beautiful people, great drinks and snacks etc.

Yesterday, I discovered there was no Oyster Kilpatrick on the “new menu”, no hummus- and then the venue ran out of fresh oysters.

This is how badly Hong Kong has come to its knees which makes the ubiquitous Alan Zeman being cheerleader for a month long Halloween Festival and saying how great it’s all going to be sound like playing with the fairies.

Seriously, Alan?

I like Alan though I haven’t seen him in almost two decades during which time, I have seen his once trendy Lan Kwai Fong area take a huge tumble and become something like a grubby third world dumping ground.

As for a month long Halloween Festival, the tame local media will show crowds in makeup and costumes and hype this up as being another humongous boost for tourism.

We all know this would be bloody bollocks.

On the same day, the CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club decided to air in public and “bemoan” his organisation’s poor turnover figures for the start of the new racing season. The CEO was apparently going to “investigate” reasons. Oh, please…

Winfried, ever heard of James Carville mention during President Clinton’s term that “It’s the economy, stupid?”

Well, it’s the economy, stupid, and despite pretty much blaming the Club’s own products and marketing strategies like coomingling, the tsunami of simulcasts usually in the middle of the night, and having some new jockeys flying in for short riding stints, none of this are going to make an iota of difference to the poor turnover.

The ONLY thing, as with ANY BUSINESS, is expanding the current customer base- and this is not happening primarily because, “IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!”

The main reason for The Decline Of Hong Kong is that here is a city that’s permanently bored with itself and one really doubts a month long Halloween Festival will do anything other than be something else that’s spooky and tacky and extremely stupid.

In the meantime, re-read the post below and do PUHLEESE try to understand that the problems Hong Kong are going through are all very much staring everyone in the face, especially its befuddled leaders who seem lost and confused and defused.
