Thank you from Hong Kong for the inspiration, Mayor Mamdani!

It wasn’t clever, because if being clever, it could suggest something cunning at work, but instead, here was something refreshingly REAL.

What was shown was Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York, working for good against almost all the odds stacked against him in the wastelands of Trump’s anger and hate fuelled and very divisive America.

While it’s very probably going to take a long time for America to recover and discover what it wants to be again, there is a sliver of Hope in what I call the Mandani Effect.

Zohran Mamdani is someone special who has seemingly come out of nowhere because- because he’s needed- and despite being a target for the grifter in chief and those who don’t like what they see.

In the midst of a grifters paradise and a pandemic of open sandwich corruption with a latter day Nero seemingly given absolute power to fiddle and rule through fear, Zohran Mamdani has somehow gone about his business of doing as if the walls of negativity put in front of him are invisible.

His actions and going against a set narrative of divide and conquer by fighting this with a Come Togetherness is something I never thought I would see when the Trumpster Dumpster assumed power and turned every day into a circus from Hades.

Some of us have been watching Good, well, trump Evil and pockets of positivity letting in shafts of light- no matter how superficial the show might be. Sometimes it’s needed to play along.

Recently, after being tagged by a teen on TikTok about a pothole they had seen on the streets of New York City, Mayor Mamdani took it upon himself to go, look at the problems and watch these being solved.

Zohran Mamdani has been making a difference wherever he could even before becoming Mayor of New York.

Now that he is Mayor, he’s showing how action speaks louder than words, and without trying, he has, on his side, a committed and community minded young astreet marketing team.

While counting down the time before leaving Hong Kong though still very much attached to the city, I couldn’t help thinking about who in this city and in a position of responsibility would do something like this and be part of the community- not for yet another meaningless photo opportunity- but because of a honest to goodness commitment to teamwork.

Who?

This is one of the key areas where Hong Kong appears to have gone awry- seemingly forgotten life’s priorities and banked everything on being rich- and if this were to ever happen, to then become even richer.

This Greed Factor is what I believe has hobbled Hong Kong and robbed it of its soul.

The standards of everything I am seeing being lowered to such a level of ineptitude and a city bereft of inspiration and desperately in need of Hope is something only the city can give itself.

For this to happen, the city elders and leaders must be able to give the generations waiting in the wings the tools to create their future.

It’s well and good for those in the twilight of their years to talk about 5-10 year plans for Hong Kong when they probably know the odds of them being around to see these come true are slim.

Even if around, how relevant will these plans be to those who are going to inherit them?

Here lies the problem that few in Hong Kong- and elsewhere in the world- don’t seem to want to understand or address: The road ahead is full of uncertainty.

What appears to be working today might not work tomorrow.

This is why there is a need today for mentors with the experience and vision and unselfish leadership skills to set the wheels in motion before the learner drivers are given the keys to the kingdom and take over.
